“The Nature of Haiku”

An exploration of haiku poetry in English with an emphasis on the seasonal and nature-focused aspects of this poetry, covering such techniques as kigo (season words), kireji (cutting words or a two-part juxtapositional structure), and shasei (primarily objective sensory imagery). Includes writing exercises and a sharing/feedback session, plus walking time in the library’s new rooftop garden.

Workshop led by Michael Dylan Welch, founder of National Haiku Writing Month (, co-founder of Haiku North America and the American Haiku Archives, and keynote speaker for a recent Haiku International Association conference in Tokyo. Michael’s website is, devoted mostly to haiku.
